Recently I’ve noticed, there seems to be a common thread with a lot of the small businesses that contact me and inquire about working together. They’re struggling to get new clients and new business.
In some cases they’ve done nothing to market their business other than using word-of-mouth. Other cases have tried everything from direct mail and print advertising to social media marketing. (Does your business fit into one of these categories?)
After listening to their individual situations and problems, the common thread can be summed up with one word…CONSISTENCY.
Let’s be honest, a lot of things in life work best when done with some consistency. Take for example your diet or exercise routine. Marketing your business should be no different.
You should have a consistent brand image, communication style or voice. And you should be reaching out to your prospects and current customers on a regular basis. Make sure your website doesn’t have one look and your direct mail with something completely different. If you’re blogging, do it regularly. If you’re sending a newsletter, do it on a set schedule. The main goal is to:
Get you’re prospects into the habit of receiving and even looking forward to your messages.
We’re all human, and sometimes following through like this is difficult. I’m absolutely guilty of not always being consistent. All I can do is to resolve to be better, and I’m sure you can do the same. If you’re looking to grow your business, it has to be done. Practice makes perfect, effort is required and consistency matters for small businesses.
Now let’s hear from you. Is there any way that you could be more consistent in your business, or everyday life? Or do you have examples of when consistency has worked for you?
